Brooklyn Center’s Youth Recreation Center now has flooring, basketball and volleyball equipment for use by the school district, city and community organizations.
The floor and basketball equipment are installed, and the volleyball nets are in the works, said Jim Glasoe, Brooklyn Center’s director of Community Activities, Recreation and Services.
The upgrades to the youth recreation center, located next to Brooklyn Center High School, are funded with $50,000 from the city’s general fund reserves from 2011, Glasoe said.
The first open gym at the center was held last week. Open gym will tentatively continue on Tuesday and Thursday night, but the city, police department and school district are still finalizing the details, Glasoe said. Community organizations would be able to schedule use of the facility as well, he said. The partners in the youth recreation center are finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding and maintenance plan, he said.
The nearly 7,000-square-foot youth recreation center was completed during the summer with $304,000 in funding from Hennepin County’s youth sports grant program.
