‘SilverSneakers’ in action
More than 100 people have joined in the “SilverSneakers” Fitness Program offered at the Brooklyn Center Community Center since the first of the year, according to Recreation Program Supervisor Kelly Mertes.
SilverSneakers is open to older adults with a health care plan that includes the fitness classes, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Medica or UCare. UCare recently added the classes to its coverage, which has increased attendance in Brooklyn Center, Mertes said.
“It’s meant to improve their physical and mental health and get people moving and exercising,” she said. There is also a strong social component to the classes, Mertes added. A 10-week session of four different classes – Muscular Strength and Range of Movement, Silver Splash, Yoga Stretch and Cardio Fit – is currently underway at the community center. People can join anytime if they have a SilverSneakers membership, Mertes said. Another session of the classes begins in March and participants with SilverSneakers memberships receive free access to the other amenities at the community center as well, she said.
A full list of the classes is available at cityofbrooklyncenter.org by clicking on Recreation under the Departments tab or in the City Watch newsletter available at the community center, 6301 Shingle Creek Parkway, Brooklyn Center.
