Schools across Brooklyn Center are in need of 12 literacy tutors and two math tutors for the 2017-18 school year.
Per the Minnesota Reading Corps and Math Corps, these vacancies are part of 1,000 needed Americorps tutors across the Twin Cities, with full-time and part-time paid tutors being sought to begin services this fall. Both the Reading and Math Corps are statewide initiatives meant to help all Minnesota students succeed in reading by third grade, and in math by eighth grade.
According to Americorps, tutor positions have been awarded to Brooklyn Center School Readiness Preschool, Earle Brown Elementary, Evergreen Park Elementary, Garden City Elementary and Odyssey Academy.
Those selected for service are committed to 11 months of tutoring, with full-timers earning $574 every two weeks and an award of up to $5,815 to pay for postsecondary education after their tutoring service is up. Full-timers are also eligible for health insurance and assistance in child care.
Candidates can come from various background and age groups, and all tutors are trained by the Math Corps and Reading Corps.
