The Brooklyn Center Fire Department is looking for new recruits to add to its team of paid on-call firefighters.

The department is currently seeking out potential recruits for its part-time roster of firefighters and is hosting a special firefighter recruitment expo 6-10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, and firefighter informational meetings at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at the West Fire Station, 6250 Brooklyn Blvd.

The fire department is authorized by the Brooklyn Center city charter to have a maximum of 40 paid, part-time on-call firefighters, and according to Fire Capt. Chris Kummer, the department currently has 32 active firefighters, with four more currently in training. Kummer added that the department hopes to recruit six to 10 new firefighters, numbers that are subject to change.

The recruitment expo will serve as an open house for prospective recruits, featuring tours of the West Fire Station, interaction with equipment and vehicles, and the opportunity to speak with city fire officials. The informational meetings will have a far more formal classroom setting, according to Kummer.

“We are really pulling out all stops this year to get a great pool of people that reflect our community, including women,” said Kummer in a statement. “Like other public safety agencies, we struggle to get those types of candidates. We are really encouraging anyone interested to come and meet us, find out what the fire service is all about, what BCFD has to offer, and learn if becoming a firefighter is for them. This is a great part-time and on-call city job, with training and opportunities to help in the community the live in.”

Benefits for on-call firefighters include training, a starting hourly wage of $9.75 an hour that would be bumped up to $15 an hour after completion at the fire academy, and a partial vesting pension after 10 years of service that upgrades to a full pension after 20 years.

The requirements for application include a minimum age of 18, a high school diploma or GED, a residence within six minutes of a Brooklyn Center fire station, a successful completion of written tests and physical ability tests, a successful criminal and medical background test, and adhering to scheduled duty shifts and on-call response.

The deadline for applications is 11:59 p.m. Aug. 13. Written exams are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24, a physical ability practice at 6 p.m. Sept. 14, and physical ability testing at 6 p.m. Sept. 16. Interviews will take place 6-9 p.m. Sept. 27 and 28. Conditional offers will be extended in October, with a tentative start date of Nov. 11.
