Golden Valley approves Sunday liquor sale amendment

Golden Valley City Council amended its hours and days of liquor sales June 20 to allow for off-sale of intoxicating liquor on Sundays.
Despite Minnesota statute changing after Gov. Mark Dayton’s signature of a Sunday liquor sale bill in early March, Golden Valley’s city code specifically prohibited Sunday sales.
“The (state) statute does allow for each locality to enable this to happen,” said City Manager Tim Cruikshank. “So, the state law doesn’t make it happen in and of itself. Each jurisdiction needs to make it happen.”
The state statute goes into affect July 1, making July 2 the first Sunday Minnesotans can purchase off-sale liquor.
Stores that choose to operate on Sundays can sell from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
