Brooklyn Center police searching for Aug. 16 assault suspects

Brooklyn Center police are searching for suspects in an assault at a local Metro Transit station.

According to BCPD Cmdr. Rick Gabler, officers were called to the 5800 block of Xerxes Avenue at 6:42 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16 after learning of a report that a man was assaulted by multiple suspects.

“It was actually to the coin laundry store, which is right next door to the bus hub,” said Gabler. “He over at an area of the strip mall next to the bus hub. He was approached by the suspects, which we have as a black male and anywhere from two to three black females. Mid-to-late teens, I guess, we’re not sure if they’re adults or juveniles.”

According to Gabler, the suspects told the victim to walk towards the nearby Gateway Commons apartment complex, under the impression that they were in possession of a weapon. It was never confirmed if a weapon was involved in the incident.

“He walked over to Gateway Commons apartments, and right as they got… to the gate, (the victim) thought better of what he was doing, and ran over back to the coin laundry,” said Gabler. “It was there at the coin laundry outside where he was assaulted and he had his wallet taken. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. I would say they were minor injuries.”

The suspects then reportedly took a bus that went in the direction of Brooklyn Park. The incident is currently under investigation by the BCPD and Metro Transit police, and surveillance video is being reviewed as of this writing.

Those with information relating to the assault or potential suspects are encouraged to contact the Brooklyn Center Police Department at 763-569-3333.
